The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy
The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy (FCRT) is a pioneering educational institution that offers equine-assisted learning to young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). At the heart of its approach is a unique curriculum that intertwines traditional academic subjects with horse-based therapy, enabling students to build vital life skills, confidence, and independence. Working closely with horses—caring for them, riding them, and learning through them—students experience meaningful personal development in a nurturing and inclusive setting.
I chose to document FCRT because of its profound impact on the lives of its learners. The centre provides more than an education; it fosters a transformative relationship between humans and animals, grounded in trust, empathy, and mutual respect. My project seeks to illuminate this powerful connection, illustrating how equine-assisted learning equips students not just to succeed in the classroom or the riding arena, but to thrive in everyday life.
Through a combination of environmental portraits and candid, observational photography, I aimed to capture the spirit of the students, the dedication of the staff, and the quiet strength of the horses. The images reflect resilience, growth, and joy—moments of triumph, reflection, and connection that unfold in this extraordinary setting.
This documentary formed the basis of my final major project, which I began at the start of February 2025 and developed through to May 2025. Over the course of several months, I spent extended time at the centre, observing daily routines, building rapport with participants, and immersing myself in the rhythms of this dynamic educational environment. This long-form engagement allowed for a sensitive and respectful representation of the people and stories at the heart of FCRT.
